Southeast Texas gets more severe weather than most of the country. Hurricanes, tropical storms, and the thunderstorm complexes that roll through Montgomery County between May and October can knock out power for hours or days. The February 2021 freeze added a different kind of threat: sustained cold that overwhelmed the state's grid for nearly a week. A whole-home standby generator is the only residential solution that keeps your AC, heating, refrigerator, medical equipment, and sump pump running through all of it.
Standby vs. Portable: A Real Difference
A portable generator costs $500 to $2,000 and runs on gasoline. It powers a few circuits through extension cords or a manual transfer switch. You have to start it by hand, refuel it, and keep it outdoors. It cannot power your central air conditioner or your full electrical panel.
A whole-home standby generator sits on a concrete pad next to the house and connects directly to your electrical panel through an automatic transfer switch (ATS). When the grid drops, the ATS detects the loss and starts the generator within 10 to 30 seconds. When utility power returns, the ATS switches back and shuts the generator down. You do not have to be home for any of this.
Sizing the Generator to Your Home
Generators are rated in kilowatts (kW). A typical home in The Woodlands, Spring, or Conroe with a 3- to 5-ton AC system, an electric range, and standard appliances needs a 20 to 24 kW unit. Larger homes or homes with pool equipment, multiple AC systems, or electric vehicle chargers may need 26 kW or more.
Undersizing is the most common mistake homeowners make. A generator that is too small will either fail to start the AC compressor (which draws a high surge current on startup) or will overload and shut itself down. The electrician performing the install should calculate the load, not estimate it.
Fuel Options
Most whole-home generators in this area run on natural gas or liquid propane (LP). Natural gas is the more convenient option if your home has an existing gas line, because the fuel supply is continuous. You never run out. LP requires a tank (typically 250 to 500 gallons) that needs periodic refilling, but LP generators tend to produce slightly more power per unit of fuel.
If your street has natural gas service, a natural gas generator is usually the simpler installation. The electrician coordinates with the gas utility to ensure the meter and regulator can handle the added load.
What the Installation Involves
Installing a whole-home generator is a multi-trade job. It touches electrical, gas, and concrete work:
- Pour or place a level concrete pad that meets the manufacturer's clearance requirements
- Set the generator unit on the pad and anchor it
- Install the automatic transfer switch at the main electrical panel
- Run conduit from the ATS to the generator
- Run a new gas line from the meter to the generator (sized to the unit's BTU input)
- Program the ATS and run a full-load test
Permits are required for both the electrical and gas work. Your installer should pull them. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation oversees electrical licensing in the state. Maintenance and Weekly Exercise
Standby generators run a brief self-test once a week, typically for 10 to 15 minutes. This keeps the engine lubricated, charges the starter battery, and confirms the ATS is responsive. You will hear it cycle. That is normal. Beyond the weekly exercise, annual maintenance includes an oil change, air filter replacement, spark plug inspection, and battery load test.
Neglecting maintenance on a generator is worse than neglecting it on a car, because you will not discover the problem until the power goes out and the unit does not start.
