Electrical work licensed technicians actually trust

Electrical panels installed decades ago were sized for the appliance load of that era — not a modern home running central air, an EV charger, a home office and a kitchen full of higher-draw appliances at once. A panel that is undersized for its actual load does not always announce itself with a tripped breaker; sometimes it just runs hot, which is the more serious problem.

Whole-home standby generators and portable units solve different problems. A portable generator can keep essentials running during a short outage but needs to be manually connected and fueled; a whole-home standby unit is wired into the panel, starts automatically, and can carry the whole house. Sizing it correctly depends on the home's total electrical load, which is why a proper assessment matters more than picking a generator off a shelf.

A dedicated EV charging circuit and basic surge protection are two of the more overlooked upgrades in an older home. Whole-home surge protection at the panel guards every circuit at once, rather than relying on individual point-of-use strips; a dedicated circuit for a charger, sized correctly to the vehicle's charging needs, is safer and faster than routing it through a shared outlet not built for sustained high draw.
