Why Your Electrical Panel Matters More Than You Think
The grey box in your garage controls every circuit in your house. Most homeowners never open it until something trips. Here is what to look for, when to worry, and when to call.

What the Panel Actually Does
Your electrical panel is the distribution point between the utility feed and every circuit in your house. Power enters through the meter, passes through the main breaker (which sets your total service amperage), and splits into individual circuit breakers that each protect one run of wire. The breakers are sized to the wire gauge on that circuit: a 15-amp breaker on 14-gauge wire, a 20-amp breaker on 12-gauge wire, and so on. When current on a circuit exceeds the breaker's rating, the breaker trips and cuts the circuit before the wire overheats.
That is the entire job. The panel is a safety device first, a distribution device second. Everything downstream of it (outlets, switches, fixtures, appliances) depends on the panel doing its job correctly.
Signs That Something Is Wrong
Most panel problems announce themselves before they become dangerous, if you know what to watch for.
- Breakers that trip repeatedly on the same circuit. A breaker that trips once during a surge is doing its job. A breaker that trips weekly on normal load is either failing internally or the circuit is overloaded and needs to be split.
- A burning or hot smell near the panel. This is never normal. It means a connection is arcing, a breaker is overheating, or a wire termination has loosened. Turn off the main breaker and call an electrician the same day.
- Scorch marks or discolouration on the panel cover or on individual breakers. Same cause as the smell, but further along.
- A panel that feels warm to the touch. Panels generate some heat during heavy load, but noticeable warmth on the cover at normal usage is a sign of a bad connection somewhere inside.
- Lights that flicker when a large appliance kicks on. Brief dimming when the AC compressor starts is common and usually harmless. Sustained flickering or dimming across multiple rooms points to a panel or service that is at capacity.
The 100-Amp Question
Many homes built in The Woodlands before the mid-1990s were wired with 100-amp service. At the time, that was adequate. The house had a gas range, a gas dryer, one AC unit, and a handful of outlets per room. Today that same house may have been remodelled with an electric range, a second AC unit for an addition, a hot tub, an EV charger in the garage, and a home office drawing continuous load.
A 100-amp panel feeding all of that is not necessarily dangerous on its own, but it has no headroom. Every new load added to a full panel forces a decision: upgrade the service to 200 amps (which means a new panel, a new meter base, and coordination with the utility) or start making compromises about which circuits share breakers. The compromises are where problems begin.
Panels That Should Be Replaced Regardless of Age
Certain panel brands have known safety issues documented by recalls, lawsuits, or failure-rate data. If your panel carries one of these names on the inside of the door, a qualified electrician should inspect it even if it appears to be working: Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok breakers), Zinsco or GTE-Sylvania (bus bar overheating), and Pushmatic (breaker trip failures). These panels are decades old by now and are not manufactured anymore, but they are still installed in houses all over Texas. An inspection determines whether the specific panel has degraded to the point where replacement is warranted.
What an Upgrade Looks Like
A panel upgrade from 100-amp to 200-amp service is a full-day job. The electrician installs a new 200-amp panel, replaces the meter base, re-lands every existing circuit onto the new breakers, and coordinates with the utility to reconnect the service drop. Permits are required for panel upgrades in Texas, and the work must be inspected. Any licensed electrician will pull the permit as part of the job.
During the work the house is without power for several hours. Plan for it: charge devices ahead of time, have coolers ready for refrigerated food if the outage falls during summer, and know that the AC will be off for the duration.
When an Inspection Is Enough
Not every old panel needs to be replaced. If your panel is a reputable brand, 200-amp, and passes an inspection (tight connections, no heat damage, breakers tripping correctly under test), it may serve the house for years to come. An inspection gives you a documented baseline. If something changes later (you add an EV charger, finish a garage apartment, install a pool heater), you have a starting point for the load calculation.
