When Your AC Stops on the Hottest Day in The Woodlands
A hundred degrees outside, the thermostat climbing inside, and the air handler is blowing warm. Here is what to check, what to expect from a service call, and why speed matters more than you think.

The First Thirty Minutes Matter
In southeast Texas, an air conditioner that stops running during July or August is not an inconvenience. It is a race against the thermal mass of your house. A well-insulated Woodlands home holds its temperature for roughly 30 to 45 minutes after the system goes down. After that, interior temps start climbing at about two degrees per hour, and once a house crosses 85 degrees indoors it takes significantly longer to pull back down than it took to get there. The compressor has to work against the heat soaked into drywall, furniture, and slab.
That is why same-day service matters. Not as a sales pitch, but as physics. The longer the house absorbs heat, the longer and harder the system has to run once the fix is in, and in some cases that extended strain is what damages a second component.
What to Check Before You Call
Before picking up the phone, there are a few things worth checking yourself. They take five minutes, cost nothing, and eliminate the most common false alarms.
- Thermostat settings. Confirm it is set to cool, auto fan, and a temperature below the current room temp. A thermostat that got bumped to heat or fan-only accounts for more service calls than most people would guess.
- The breaker panel. Find the breaker labelled for your air handler or condenser and check that it has not tripped. If it has, reset it once. If it trips again immediately, leave it off and call. A breaker that will not hold is telling you something, and forcing it is not the answer.
- The air filter. Pull it out and look at it. A filter clogged with dust restricts airflow to the point where the evaporator coil can freeze solid, and a frozen coil will shut the system down. If the filter is packed, replace it, then give the system 30 minutes with the fan on before trying to cool again.
- The outdoor unit. Walk outside and look at the condenser. If the fan is not spinning and you can hear a hum, the capacitor may have failed. If there is no sound at all and the breaker is on, the contactor or the control board may be the issue.
What Happens During a Service Call
A good technician starts with diagnosis, not parts. The first step is measuring the system: supply and return air temperatures, superheat and subcooling at the coil, amp draw on the compressor and fan motors, and refrigerant pressures if the gauges need to come out. Those numbers tell the story before anyone opens a panel.
Common summer failures in The Woodlands fall into a short list. Capacitors, because electrolytic capacitors degrade in heat and humidity. Contactors, because the switching contacts pit and burn over thousands of cycles. Condensate drain clogs, because the combination of humidity and biological growth in a dark, wet PVC line is constant here. And refrigerant leaks, often at the service valves or at a coil joint that has vibrated loose over years.
A capacitor or contactor swap is typically a 20- to 40-minute job once the part is on the truck. A drain clearing is even faster. A refrigerant leak is more involved because the leak has to be found, repaired, the system pulled into a vacuum to remove moisture, and then recharged by weight. That is a half-day job done right.
The Refrigerant Question
If your system was manufactured before 2010, it likely runs on R-22, which is no longer produced in the United States. Existing stock is limited and expensive. A technician who finds a significant leak on an R-22 system will give you a choice: repair and recharge at the current market price for R-22, or replace the condenser and coil with a system that runs R-410A or the newer R-454B. Neither option is cheap, and an honest technician will lay out the numbers rather than pushing one direction.
If your system is newer and runs R-410A, recharging after a leak repair is straightforward. The refrigerant is readily available and priced reasonably.
How to Keep It From Happening
Annual maintenance catches most of the failures described above before they strand you in the heat. A tune-up includes checking capacitor values with a meter (a weak cap reads below its rated microfarads months before it fails), inspecting the contactor face, flushing the condensate drain, verifying refrigerant charge, and cleaning the outdoor coil. None of those steps are visible to you as a homeowner, which is why the system feels fine until it is not.
